Final Analysis

Throughout the semester I had the opportunity to expand my skillset, meet new people, and master the art of hospitality.  I hope you all were able to learn a thing or two!

My Final Reflection

When it came time to search for an internship, I wanted to be a part of something meaningful and rewarding. While I could have focused on my work at the design studio, I decided to choose something closer to my heart. With great enthusiasm, I accepted an internship with the Alumni Engagement and Events at Saint Mary’s College of California. There is no place I adore more than Saint Mary’s, it has gifted me with lifelong friendships, countless memories, and the best mentor.
After four years of friendship, it was such an honor to work alongside Philip Goodwin. I truly can’t imagine anyone better suited to guide me through my internship journey!

Throughout my internship, I had the pleasure of planning high scale events and interacting with such  interesting people. The opportunity to engage with people from all walks of life, under the shared passion for Saint Mary’s was immensely special to me. I feel privileged to have connected with accomplished individuals.

For years, I have watched my mother and father host curated parties at our home. Every detail was carefully plotted and arranged to perfection. From the menu to the table linens, they aimed to create an atmosphere like no other. I watched attentively as guests mingled with ease and gazed around the room in amazement. Entering this internship, I was sure to carry these lovely glimpses and lessons with me.

My favorite event to have been a part of was the Winemaker Dinner, as I assisted in planning the first of its kind. In choosing the color themes, favors, and paper products I was able to pull from my creative side. Additionally, I learned the ins and outs of facilitating rentals and guest lists. By attending the event, I was able to exert my networking skills and make meaningful connections with fellow gaels. Collectively, this event allowed me to call upon my creativity and communicative skills, while also expanding my knowledge of all things event planning!

As I reflect on my blog posts, I feel proud of the work I was able to accomplish. Expanding further, I believe I have taken one step closer to mastering the art of hospitality. Truthfully, there is no greater role than the hostess. They hold the ability to create an event that will become an everlasting memory. Additionally, they bring people together to engage in fresh, lively conversations. Throughout my entire life, I have always enjoyed bringing people together. Whether it was helping at a reunion or the High Potential luncheon, I was able to witness alumni come together to enjoy one another’s company. There is nothing more special than uniting people once again.

Looking to the future, I am confident that each lesson and skill acquired throughout this semester will serve me exponentially. From each event, I have learned to facilitate fundraisers, work with differing vendors, and manage guests. Whether it is a large scale event or a staff meeting, I want to utilize these skills in any way possible.

To be hospitable is to be gracious, with each encounter I wish to remain kind and create a meaningful space for guests to enjoy. Through each event, I was reminded of the importance of paying attention to detail. Remembering that little details and acknowledgments make the guests experience all the more special.

Hospitality Hack: Take advantage of every opportunity, you will open the door to countless lessons and experiences that will serve you in the future. And remember to always be hospitable!

With the help of my mentor and ample opportunities, I was able to gain a stronger understanding of office dynamics and the event planning business. I am forever grateful to have landed such an amazing internship at the place I call home. I will cherish watching alumni see each other at Reunion and await the day I return to do the same.
